Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) has been recognised in several award categories at the Bonds & Loans Africa Awards. This year’s award ceremony featured awards for both 2021 and 2022.  In particular, RMB was honoured as Local Markets Bond House of the Year (2021).

  • Local Markets Bond House of the Year 2021
  • Bookrunner for Local Currency Sovereign, Supra & Agency Bond Deal of the Year 2022 for Rand Water
  • Bookrunner for Local Currency Syndicated Loan Deal of the Year 2022 for MTN Zambia
  • Joint bookrunner for International Corporate Bond Deal of the Year 2022 for Bidvest
  • Joint bookrunner for The Structured Bond Deal of the Year 2022 for Sappi

Said Leigh Buckley, Head of  DCM SA at RMB: “We are honoured to be recognised as the Local Bond Market House of the Year for 2021. RMB has been a market leader in the debt capital market (DCM) space consistently bringing innovative deals to the capital markets while supporting our clients with market leading offerings.”

RMB acted as sole arranger and sustainability agent for RandWater, which went on to win Local Currency Sovereign, Supra & Agency Bond Deal of the Year 2022. RMB arranged RandWater’s ZAR1,709bn auction which included the first and largest ZAR denominated  sustainability-linked bond (SLB) for a  state owned company.

The Local Currency Syndicated Loan Deal of the Year Award 2022 was awarded to MTN Zambia (MTNZ). The facility was aimed at reducing the significant impact that the macro-economic challenge of currency depreciation and FX Liquidity in Zambia had on MTNZ’s business performance. As the sole arranger, RMB successfully rebalanced MTNZ’s currency mix to predominately local currency through co-ordinating the syndication of ZMW1.4billion facility which involved eight banks.

RMB was also recognised in the International Corporate Bond Deal of the Year 2022, awarded to Bidvest, as part of a consortium of banks. The Structured Bond Deal of the Year 2022 was awarded to Sappi Southern Africa, where RMB and Morgan Stanley acted as joint bookrunners.

“I am proud of our team who have worked tirelessly to support our clients with a number of innovative solutions, across multiple sectors and the continent, in very tough market conditions due to Covid-19,” added Denzil Ramen, Co-head of Debt & Trade Solutions at RMB.

Bonds & Loans Africa Awards recognises the most innovative and ground-breaking deals from Sovereign, Corporate and Financial Institution issuers and borrowers.

The selection process involves close examination of deal size, tenor, structure and distribution; analysis and background of the borrower and their accessibility financing with extra credit for those deals demonstrating high quality execution, accessing new pools of liquidity, innovative structuring, and opening-up new markets.
