Born in Pretoria, Barker studied at the Pretoria Technikon, the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town, and the École des Beaux Arts in Luminy, Marseille. He currently lives and works in Johannesburg.
Barker works in both traditional and non-traditional media, encompassing painting, mixed media, installation and found objects, and explores a variety of styles. His work often portrays an incendiary quality which deals with political and social issues.
"All my work in the past has commented on society – about identity – and where I come from because I am white and I’m African. So it deals with universal issues.
I have done many controversial things in art, because I have been telling my story, my life."
