Born in East London, Eastern Cape, Catherine graduated from the East London Technical School of Art in 1969. He lives and works in Hartebeespoort Dam, Gauteng.
Both a sculptor and a painter, Catherine works in everything from oil, acrylic and watercolour, to wood, fibreglass and metal. His work – darkly humorous, somewhat surrealistic and often vitriolic in its observation of human failings (in particular those of the apartheid regime) – has undergone numerous metamorphoses throughout the last four decades. Cartoonish, gaudily coloured and distorted figures have become an easily recognisable feature of many of his works."There’s an angst in my work that will never go away," Catherine has said of his creations. "It was there before I knew anything about politics."
