Self-taught, Pemba lived and worked in Port Elizabeth and was a member of the 'Thirties Generation' of pioneer black artists. In 1979 he was presented with an Honorary Masters Degree from the University of Fort Hare for his contribution to South African art. In 2004, the South African Government awarded him the Order of Ikhamanga in Gold, for his pioneering and exceptional contribution to the development of the art of painting and literature.
